Omaha Public Schools prides itself on the rich diversity of our students and families. There are a variety of services available to support families who speak a language other than English at home. 

All new K-12 families enrolling in a school in our district complete a Home Language Survey to identify students who speak another language other than English.  Students who have been identified with another language are given a Language Assessment Screener.  The results help the staff determine if students qualify for English Learner services.  Students who qualify will be tested yearly to determine the continuation of services.

English Learner supports at Omaha Public Schools are designed to help students accelerate their language development and be successful in their classes.  Our program offers a variety of services. 

Migrant Education
The Migrant Education Program strives to provide services and materials to help migratory children succeed in school. Students in grades K-12 can participate in extended learning and student leadership camps offered during intersession. Children and youth who are younger than 22 and have not yet earned a high school diploma are eligible to receive services. They can earn a diploma, develop their skills, and expand their options for the future.  Federal guidelines for eligibility are based on parents, guardians, or youth working in temporary or seasonal agricultural or fishing employment, including meatpacking plants, and families who have moved to Omaha in the last three years.

Refugee Education

Refugee Education programs provide newly arrived refugee families with additional resources to help them learn how to navigate the U.S. education system. Students in grades K-12 can participate in extended learning and camps offered during intersession. The Welcome Center at our Teacher Administrative Center offers English classes for adults and family literacy classes. Families can also attend cultural orientation sessions to learn more about supporting their children in school and connect with Omaha area community resources.
