Northwest High Introduces Early College Program

Omaha Public Schools is expanding opportunities for students to earn college credit in the 2023-24 school year. Northwest High and Metropolitan Community College (MCC) are partnering for the first Early College program in our district.

“The Northwest team is excited about the opportunities that this program provides for students,” Principal Kimberly Jackson, Ed.D., said. “As we welcome our inaugural class in for the 2023-24 school year, we look forward to seeing this vision become a reality."

Freshmen joining the program can earn a Liberal Arts Transfer Associate of Arts Degree along with their high school diploma. The MCC degree helps students build a strong foundation and develop thinking skills as they prepare for a four-year degree. There is no cost to students in the Early College program.

Most universities accept credits students earn through the program, including the University of Nebraska and other MCC transfer partners. These credits count toward many of the general education requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree. This allows students to reduce the cost and time it takes to complete their four-year degree.

Early College is open to all Omaha Public Schools students who will be entering ninth grade. Students must choose Northwest High as their first choice for their school selection and complete the Early College application. Applicants will also take part in a family interview and provide a writing sample.

Students accepted in the Early College program will attend classes at both Northwest High and MCC. The program includes core classes, physical education, world language and electives. Students can also take advantage of Advanced Placement and honors courses. Students may be eligible for transportation based on the student assignment plan guidelines.

“We would love to share more about the program and look forward to seeing families out at our open house on Jan. 26 to learn more,” Jackson said.

Families unable to attend the open house can learn more and apply on the Northwest High website. School selection forms are due back to the student’s current school on Jan. 27.
