Drama & Theatre

  • Burke High School's Theatre Department was founded in 1964. Currently under the direction of Emily Mokrycki, we hold a high standard of excellence in the performing arts. Each year, Burke puts on a Fall Play,  a Winter Play, and a Spring Musical. Within our classes, we produce a One Act that is showcased at the Omaha Public Schools One Act Festival in December and we work with our ACP Rockstar students to produce an adapted musical each spring.

We are a member of the International Thespian Society, an honor society for the theatre arts. At the end of each year we induct new members and honor the achievements of students through the year. We also send students to our Nebraska State Festival in January and many continue on to the International Festival in the summer. At both students attend workshops, high quality productions, participate in the International Theatre Excellence Awards program, Improv and Tech Challenge, and work with theatre students from across the state and country.

Burke is a member of the Nebraska High School Theatre Academy where we have been honored six times as Outstanding Musical (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Shrek the Musical, Crazy for You, Big Fish, Disney's Freaky Friday and Urinetown) along with Backstage Award (Shrek the Musical) , and Outstanding Ensemble (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Urinetown). Many students have also received individual honors, but most importantly we have had the opportunity to attend FREE Broadway Master Classes at the Holland Centers multiple times a year.

Burke has an active Drama Club which meets weekly on Thursday from 3:15-4:00pm and ANYONE is welcome to attend. This group holds numerous social events and activities throughout the year. We hope to grow our family each year and spread the passion of the Theatre Arts.
