Stephanie Hoesing of Omaha Public Schools has earned recognition as the state’s 2022 School Social Worker of the Year. The School Social Work Association of Nebraska (SSWAN) surprised Hoesing with the honor during a presentation on Wednesday, May 11.

Hoesing serves students as Omaha Public Schools’ Social Work Supervisor. She has more than 25 years of experience working with children and families.

"Stephanie is a leader within her district and our association because of her dedication to finding resources for students and families,” said Molly Schnabel, SSWAN president.

The School Social Worker of the Year Award celebrates the contributions of social work to the educational experience. Hoesing’s nominators described her as a strong advocate for students, families and staff. She is recognized as someone who acts quickly to provide resources when needed in collaboration with community partners.

“Her work directly impacts thousands of students and families each day,” said Kathryn Hecht-Weber, school counseling supervisor for Omaha Public Schools. “Stephanie’s leadership and skills have been instrumental in growing the School Social Work Program in Omaha Public Schools.”

Hoesing, a licensed clinical social worker, joined Omaha Public Schools in 2008 as the school social worker at Northwest High. She transitioned to her current role in 2015 and helped expand the program from 10 staff to more than 50.

“The reason our social work program is so successful is because of every one of the individuals on our team and the work that they do,” said Hoesing after receiving the award. “It is noticed and valued by our students, families, and staff. I’m extremely honored.”

Hoesing is the first from Omaha Public Schools to receive the honor from SSWAN.
