History

  • Morton Middle School is located at 4606 Terrace Drive in Omaha, Nebraska on about 24 acres on the north edge of Maple Village.  Construction began in 1964 and the school opened in September of 1965 officially as J. Sterling Morton Junior High School.  The original building had 36 classrooms, an auditorium, gymnasium, pool, cafeteria, and industrial arts shops.  Mr. Lawrence L. Routt was the first principal of this 7-9th grade junior high with about 550 students.  In a unique situation, Burke Senior High School students were housed at Morton from 1965-1967.  After the Burke students moved into their own building, Dodge Elementary 6th grade students were welcomed into the building as a way to temporarily solve overcrowding issues there in the late 60s and early 70s.

There are currently around 750 6-8th grade students enrolled at Morton.  A renovation that includes a two-story nine classroom addition, a conversion of the auditorium into four classrooms and a large 100 person meeting space, and updates to electrical, mechanical, and many other behind the scenes items is currently underway.
