Being "Healthy", Means Being Mentally Healthy Too

In May of 2019, the American Psychological Association released findings of their survey that found a total of 87% of American adults agreed that having a mental health disorder is nothing to be ashamed of, and 86% said they believe that people with mental health disorders can get better, according to the poll.
Mental health awareness has reached an inflection point. Singers, actors, and athletes are increasingly going public about their challenges. Michael Phelps has been outspoken about his struggles with depression. Lady Gaga told the press what it’s like to live with PTSD. Prince Harry added his voice to the group when he spoke about his battle with anxiety. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, talks about how he copes with depression, said, “One of the most important things you can realize is that you’re not alone.”
Common health issues:
- According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, this disorder is highly treatable, but only around 37 percent of those affected actually receive treatment. It is common to be diagnosed with both anxiety and depression. Symptoms can include excessive worrying, feeling agitated, restlessness, fatigue, tense muscles, difficulty sleeping, and panic attacks.
- Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability for Americans aged 15 to 44. This disorder is more prevalent in women than men. Some of the symptoms include depressed mood, diminished interest or pleasure, change in weight, appetite and sleep patterns, fatigue, and a feeling of worthlessness. This can only be diagnosed with a consultation from a healthcare provider.
The American Psychological Association recognizes the psychological impact that schools have on their students. Millions of students spend a large part of their day, and lifetime, at school, increasing the effect that school environments can have on psychological well-being.
Your health is important and you can’t be healthy without good mental health. Remember, you are not alone and it’s ok not to be ok. Reach out, there are many who care.

Mental Health Awareness Month 2023
We celebrate May as Mental Health Awareness Month to inform and educate people about mental health and wellbeing. We want to stop the stigma associated with mental health and create a welcoming, inclusive, non-judgmental space for everyone.
Statistics say that 1 in 4 people experience a mental health issue. This means you know someone and may be sitting next to someone who has struggled with mental health. It may be depression, anxiety or perhaps they have experienced trauma. The good news is, mental health is treatable and things do get better.
We are lucky in our schools to have so many people who care about us. School Leaders, Teachers, Social Workers, Counselors and the Methodist Community Counseling Program. If you need someone to talk to, or you are having thoughts that are more than just a bad day, we are here for you.
Remember:
- Being healthy means you are in good shape physically and mentally
- It's OK not to be OK
- You are enough
- The world is a better place because you are here
