Spring Lake Elementary Mother and Daughter Share Love of Teaching
Angie Brodine has walked the halls of Spring Lake Elementary, carrying her daughter Amaya as an infant, holding her hand as a student, and now, supporting her as a co-worker.
As she embarks on her final year of teaching, Angie reflects on her journey, while Amaya begins her own as a first-year teacher.
“As a new teacher, it’s nice to have a person I feel safe asking any question to and getting help when needed,” said Amaya Brodine, Spring Lake Elementary fifth grade teacher. “And who better to be that person than your mom.”
Amaya has had a front-row seat to her mom’s 30-year teaching career. She values the lessons she has learned from her mom and her school community.
“Coming back to South Omaha feels like coming home to the community that raised me,” Amaya said. “And teaching with my mom in her final year is so special.”
As a Spring Lake Elementary Math teacher, Angie is grateful for the lasting impact she’s had on her students and for the special opportunity to see her daughter carry that forward.
“When my kids were old enough to attend school, it was an easy decision to enroll them at Spring Lake,” said Angie. “I know how hard my co-teachers and I work and knew my kids would have a great education here.”
As Angie enters her final year of teaching, she’s filled with gratitude - not just for the students she’s taught but for the opportunity to see her daughter pick up where she left off.
“I’ve always believed that teaching is about making connections and leaving a lasting impact,” said Angie. “Knowing Amaya will carry on that work, in her own way, gives me peace as I move into this next chapter.”
For Amaya, stepping into her mom’s shoes isn’t just about following in her footsteps but continuing a tradition of love for the students and the community that has shaped their careers.
“Teaching at Spring Lake feels like home,” said Amaya. “And being able to do it with my mom this year is an honor. I hope I can make a difference like she does.”
As the two look toward the future, it’s clear that the legacy of care, dedication, and love for Spring Lake Elementary will continue to thrive.
