African American History Challenge Judy Unger Meetings are Mondays 201 African American History Challenge: The African America History Challenge is a national educational program designed by the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. to enhance the study of African-American history. The goal of the local competition is to encourage pride, self-worth, and an appreciation of the African-American legacy and culture in Omaha youth.

Book Blasters Ryan Garcia Meetings are Mondays from 3:10-5:10 Room 325 Book Blasters: Book Blasters is a district-wide competition that involves a team of students who are responsible for reading approximately 12 selected novels. Teams then compete to see who reigns supreme in knowledge of the novels’ content.

This team prides themselves on school spirit, promoting pride within our school, supporting athletics at Bluestem and being role models at Bluestem. We look forward to cheering on the Meadowlarks!

Debate Ryan Garcia Meetings are Thursdays from 3:10-5:10 325 Debate: Students will research various topics and view each topic from multiple perspectives. Students will conduct 2-3 weeks of research on their topics and present their arguments in a debate form with 2 5-minutes sessions of arguments and 1 3-minute session for a rebuttal. Debate teams have opportunities to continue their success at the high school level.

Fermi Math League Ryan Garcia Meetings are on Tuesdays from 3:10-5:10 325 Math contests/competitions are available for all grade levels throughout the year. Fermi Math is for 6th graders who want to answer math questions with no definitive answer. Students will create up to 10 questions that they will answer in order to find a solution to the main question.

Mariachi Club Ms Unger, Ms Soria, Ms. Leddy and community partner, Emmanel Saenz. Wednesdays after school Ensemble Room #201 Mariachi Club students are learning the art form of mariachi. Mariachi is a musical art form that orginiated in the Western region of Mexico. The students learn to sing songs, and also learn traditional mariachi instruments such as vihuela, gitarron, guitar, trumpet and or violin. The teaching artists include Ms. Unger, Ms. Hannah Ledy, an OPS band teacher, and also Mr. Miguel Gonzalez, a community partner who has his own mariachi group, called Mariachi Los Galleros. Math Counts Rebekah Hartner Tuesdays 3:10-5pm 121 Math Counts competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. It is supported by the National Society of Professional Engineers at the state and local levels.

Pep Squad Erika Ward Monday, Wednesday, Friday Cafeteria Pep Squad is a strong group of 6th graders that practice learning cheers after school. They cheer at games and greet students at pep rallies. They are excited to represent Bluestem!
Quiz Bowl Ryan Garcia Meetings are Fridays from 3:10-5:10 Room 325 Quiz Bowl: Quiz Bowl is an academic competition. A four-member team competes against the clock answering questions from various disciplines. Skills, such as teamwork, cooperative group discussion, problem solving, and reaction time, are enhanced through practices and competitions.

Students participate in mini-spelling bees in their Language Arts class. The top students then compete in the Davis Spelling Bee.
