School Safety Drills:
Schools shall practice school safety drills for emergency responses in cooperation with Standard Response Protocol for Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.
To be in compliance with the fire code, there are to be ten evacuation drills exercised each school year. An evacuation drill shall be conducted every month in each school building when students are in session. The monthly drills may be deferred in months of severe weather but only if four drills have already been conducted and, provided that the required number of annual drills is achieved.
Schools are to complete one Hold, Secure, Lockdown, and Shelter drill per semester. Each school is required to document mandated safety drills in accordance with their Emergency Operation Plan. The Office of School Safety monitors all Emergency Operation Plans for the District.
Since many parents may not be at home, all children and faculty may be retained at the school building in case of extreme emergency. The Omaha Public Schools District Crisis Immediate Response Plan may be activated to inform parents/guardians regarding where and when children may be picked up at school or at a reunification site.
