Cloze: Best Word

  1. Provide a copy of a brief passage with significant words deleted for each group.
  2. Each group will include a recorder and a reporter.
  3. The group will decide the best word to go in the blank from the sentence and entire passage. They will decide why the word was chosen. The recorder will fill in the words.
  4. The reporter will share the chosen word and the reason why it was chosen with the entire class.
  5. Other reporters will give their group's choices and reasons. (All groups' responses will be accepted.)

How to Learn Vocabulary through Context

  1. Compose and duplicate a series of sentences containing underlined nonsense words.
  2. Students will circle the word clues and then determine the meaning of the nonsense words.
  3. Follow up the written exercise with oral evaluation so all students understand the strategy.
    1. Examples:
The lovely, young zippot won the Miss America contest. (woman, lady)
The artist loved to paint pictures of the warpals docked in the harbor. (boats)
