School Based Reading Specialists

Reading Specialists are assigned to schools to teach reading and writing to individuals and small groups of children. Specialists:

  • Diagnose student needs.
  • Develop individual educational plans.
  • Provide intensive, focused instruction.
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers and other instructional support members.
  • Plan reading and writing strategies with teachers as requested.
  • Conference with parents on specific student needs.

Reading/Communication Specialists

Reading/Communication Specialist services work with schools on a consistent basis to provide ongoing reading support for classroom teachers. They assist teachers with assessment and diagnosis of student reading needs, model reading strategies, and support teachers with the implementation of the district reading standards.

Reading/Communication Specialists work with the building administrator to determine focus areas. Flexible scheduling allows them to work with individual teachers or grade levels coordinating supplemental student reading services. Reading/Communication Specialists assist teachers with determining and responding to individual student reading needs and communicating with parents. They offer in-depth diagnosis of individual students for the SAT team process. They provide professional development for staff focusing on school needs like small group instruction and selecting appropriate books for a classroom library. Teacher support includes:

  • Modeling strategies for classroom teachers
  • In-depth diagnosis of individual students
  • SAT information and follow-up interventions
  • Site-based staff development
  • District professional development
  • Implementation of the district Reading/Language Arts Standards
  • Facilitation of the Third grade Reading Standard
  • Mentors for new reading personnel
  • Parent communication

Secondary Reading Specialist

Services to secondary schools are facilitated by a Secondary Reading Specialist who:

  • Provides staff development for reading teachers.
  • Consults with reading teachers about student needs.
  • Diagnoses student needs and determines follow-up recommendations.
  • Develops curriculum to meet the needs of students.
  • Evaluates resource materials.
  • Provides inservices for content area teachers.

Staff Development Offerings

Staff development is offered monthly for reading personnel and is based on district needs and individual teacher/paraprofessional concerns.

  • New Title I reading teachers
  • Experienced Title I reading teachers
  • Reading Services Center reading specialists
  • School-wide Title I reading paraprofessionals
  • Non-Title I reading paraprofessionals
  • Secondary reading teachers

Diagnostic Services

Diagnostic testing is available at teacher and parent request. The purpose is to:

  • Indicate reading related strengths and weaknesses.
  • Analyze individual needs and make follow-up recommendations.
  • Identify the child's stage of development as a reader.
  • Provide information about how the individual child learns.
  • Offer individual, skills, and flex group support suggestions.
  • Consult with parents and teachers.

Reading Resource Center

The Reading Resource Center is a lending library of instructional and enrichment materials for classroom teacher check out.

Available items for emerging literacy development:

  • Alphabet readiness

  • Big books
  • Books with tapes

Phonics and comprehension development:

  • Non-consumable skill books
  • Taped materials
  • Reading kits on various levels

Enrichment/extension activities:

  • Multiple copy book sets
  • Literature correlated to each basal unit
  • Theme units
  • Social studies/science
  • Multicultural
  • Trade books
  • Graded extension/pleasure reading packets

The Reading Resource Center is open year round Monday-Friday, 7:30-4:00 p.m. Orders can be processed over the phone (557-2574) or you may browse the shelves. Materials can be delivered/ returned via school mail. Checkout is for nine weeks with possible extension based on request.
