COURSE TITLE: Band

PREREQUISITES:
Previous instrumental music experience or permission of the instructor is required for enrollment in band.
CONTENT:
Band is designed to reinforce techniques and skills from previous music classes as well as introduce new techniques for individual advancement. Through literature studied in class, students will be introduced to a wide range of musical styles and the cultures associated with those styles.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To develop individual musical ability to its highest possible level.
2. To develop an appreciation of all music and cultures.
3. To develop proper social skills by working together for a common goal.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Playing evaluations, written tests and assignments.
2. Class participation.
3. Public performances-mandatory.
4. Out of class preparation-practice.
CLASSROOM RULES:
All school and district rules apply in the music classroom. The following additional rules will allow the band to have a successful year.
1. Play when asked to play.
2. Don’t play when asked not to play.
3. Do not disrupt the rehearsal process.
Food of any kind is banned during rehearsal time.

OTHER PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES:
All City Music Festival-students chosen by audition.
Blair Middle School Honor Band Festival-students nominated by instructor.
NSBA All State 8th Grade Honor Band-8th graders chosen by audition.
Grandparents Breakfast, Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly, OAYO Honors Orchestra, OPS Middle School Adjudication Day, CD recording.
GRADING SCALE
1=90% and up
2=80%-89%
3=70%-79%
4=60%-69%
5=below 60%
