Getting your first job can be a very scary experience, but it doesn’t have to be if you are prepared. When at an interview look presentable because you can’t change your first impression. A good idea is to bring up your grades because they play a big role in getting a job. A resume will also do you some good. A resume is a concise, error-free, reader-friendly, one-page document that can be easily scanned by the reader.
You should start now building a good reputation for being present and prompt at school and for all activities. Learn to take responsibility and take on jobs even if you are not asked. Volunteer to help others. Make sure to use people as references that are not related to you, and who think you are terrific so they can verify that you are a responsible young adult.
Also, if you are fourteen or fifteen, you must obtain a work permit from the TAC building. Stay out of trouble inside and outside of school. Students with a police record are not allowed to get funds from the Federal government to attend college. Ms. Bartling counselor, said, “A good school and work record will help you to get a better job and scholarships for college.”
In your portfolio, you should include samples of your writing, and state what you would be able to contribute to the company. That is called selling yourself. You should also state in your interview why you want the job. Be sincere and talk clearly and with confidence as you look the interviewer in the eyes. “A firm hand shake is always appropriate,” said Ms Sallis, counselor.
Another thing you should do when trying to get a job is smile and look friendly. This can be the one thing that makes an employer hire you over someone else. “When I got my first job I tried to be as bubbly as I could. I stayed positive and I got the job,” said Renita Wright, 8, who works at McDonalds’. “I love my job and I’m glad they hired me, that’s why I come in to work on time and do what I am told to do,” Isaiah hytche, 8, who works at Burger King.
