In October of 2004 Deirdra Washington came to teach eighth grade science. Washington’s last day was April 4, she mostly enjoyed her students. Washington says that all her students are like gifts. She feels by the end of the year all of the presents have been opened. Students are individual gifts to teachers and each one is special in their own way. She saw the students when they were seventh graders, but they became a gift to her as an eighth grader. “I know so many awesome kids and it’s a joy to know they were once upon a time one of my presents,” said Washington.
Washington’s favorite subjects to teach were chemistry, genetics, physics, and astronomy. Washington is now the Science Lead Teacher. In this position Washington is able to work with all seventh through twelfth grade science teachers in OPS. She loves science a lot and loved teaching at McMillan. The position that she has taken now allows Washington to potentially make a small difference for all science teachers and/or students throughout the school district. “The opportunity was there and this seemed like a great time for me to expand my career options,” said Washington.
Washington misses a lot of the staff that she met here, but has made a lot of new friends. The most fun part for Washington is teaching at a school where she had been a student in the past. She misses the loud sounds that she heard in school everyday because in her office, it is very quiet. When I feel lonely and miss the kids I can call up to the school and visit, to observe and teach if I want to,” said Washington.
