National Junior Honor Society Induction Monday, May 26, 2008 (88 reads)
NJHS Induction

NJHS Induction is a ceremony that took place on May, 19 at 7:00 PM. Students that had been exceptional throughout the year, earned good grades, and excelled in activities in and out of school were chosen to be inducted in National Junior Honor Society. It also is an honor to be inducted into the Society. NJHS looks good on a college application, so the students that are being inducted will now have a leg up on the competition for colleges of their choices.

A competition for all Music Tech students statewide was held from January 1 through March 21. Music Tech students had to create a likeable song and submit it to their teacher. Twenty-four students entered, and the evaluation process lasted from March 21 until April 28.

The auditorium was full of life and endless music on Thursday, May 15th, during the annual spring concert. Dr. Keith Bigsby, principal, said its one of those things that helps us finsh off a great school year. Mrs. Erickson, Mr. Henderson, Mrs. Kathka, and Ms. Simpson each helped conduct the performance. "I thought the concert turned out very well," Simpson said.

All over Omaha 2,300 the middle school students participated in high school athletic fairs held at the Omaha Public High Schools. Approximately 160 McMillan students went on the trip. They went to the high school they were planning on attending.

In all the language arts classes, the students were given the opportunity to write and publish a book. Whether it was filled with poems throughout the year or a story about a dog, it was still published. On the books, the students should creatively draw and color the covers any way they liked.

Honors Night is similar to graduation, but only for middle school students, 225 students attended honors night. Honors Night was held on Tuesday, May 6. Administrators and teachers had been planning this since the beginning of April. Students received awards for math, language arts, journalism; basically everything except athletics.

Every year Mrs. Figueroa, gifted and talented teacher, sends some students to compete against other students in the History Day Competition. Figueroa’s students write a history paper and make a poster board for the project. Then a few students go on to compete at the district level. If they do well they go on to state.

Staring in January, Mr. Mayberger’s Principals of Engineering eighth grade class began working on their projects for the Engineering Competition sponsored by the Peter Kiewit Institute. The competition, which took place April 23, 2008, took students around four months to prepare for. Students began researching their topics and forming their ideas.

There is a new staff member at school. Her name is Ms. De’Brie and she teaches language arts. She graduated from a Nebraska Wesleyan in 2003 and she is from Lincoln, Nebraska. She used to teach language arts at a school in Las Vegas. “I decided I wanted to teach at McMillan because I heard really good things about it,” Debrie said.

Violence in Omaha, is getting worse by the minute. We had 5 weekend shootings not too long ago. Now, that in my opinion is just too much! The first weekend shooting was near 24th and Lake Streets. A 24 year old man was shot in his car in a parking lot of a convenience store at 2 A.M. The second shooting was Sunday at 2:30 A.M. on 30th and Ames Ave. A 21- year old man was shot by an off-duty police officer.
