Discovery Day Activities
Menu
Students are required to complete 50 points (for each quarter) from the following menu if desiring an "A" for the Discovery Day activities. Students will earn these points by selecting activities that suit their interests, learning style, and time available to complete the activities.
Work must include:
Name
Module Topic
Class Period
Challenger (25 points)
Build a Model or Diorama
Model -3D showing the parts of something or
Diorama- box with module topic items with scenery in background (not drawings glued to a box)
Must relate to an activity from the selected module
Model must be done neatly and be made of materials other than paper
Model must clearly show material learned.
Model must show time invested (suitable for display)
Oral Defense is required
Write an Essay
Essay must be specifically related to the module selected
5 paragraphs with 5-7 sentences (follow Language Arts expectations)
Must include facts learned from module as well as student thoughts
Spelling and grammar checked
2-3 sources sited.
Instructional Pod Cast or Video for an Activity
Must pre arrange to use technical devices or use your own
Activity must be one from the selected module (clearly identified in the podcast)
Instructions must follow the module’s instructions (clarification encouraged)
The entire activity described should be able to be completed by following podcast
Endeavour (10 pts)
PPT Summary
7-10 slides describing each of the session activities in the selected module (1 slide per session)
or
7-10 slides detailing one session, include materials and instructions necessary to complete that session
Give special attention to one activity telling why it is important to now and something about what you learned
For each activity described, include material needed- include an appropriate graphic on each slide
Describe how each activity supports the module learning experience (why did the module have you do the activity?)
Do an Extra Lab
(not available for all modules- see the enrichment menu in your selected module)
Create a Poem, Song or Illustrated story
Song lyrics are written in verses
Writing must include 7+ vocabulary terms from module selected or get a non-vocabulary idea approved by the teacher.
For credit underline the key words and facts.
Vocabulary terms must be used according to correct definitions
Poem should follow a specific type of poetry style
Material must be directly related to the module topic
Wording must demonstrate knowledge of module selected.
Discovery (5 pts)
Current Event summary
Can be from a Newspaper, magazine or website
Must be related to something learned in the module selected
1 paragraph (5-7 sentences) about facts learned & student thoughts
Module Vocabulary Terms
Vocabulary Words defined as flash cards (minimum 10 words)
Cards are attractive and neat
Spelling and definitions must be correct
Must be able to define a word from randomly drawn card
Labeled Drawing
Drawing must relate to selected module topic (do not draw your module station)
Drawings are done on appropriate paper (unlined)
Must label module vocabulary terms or 7+ identifications of parts of objects (DNA ladder, flower parts, etc)
Must be able to explain define a randomly selected label
Website Review (see below for alphabetized link list)
Must be module related
1 paragraph (5-7 sentences) about facts learned & student thoughts
Points required for Discovery grade (semester):
A 90-100 points
B 80-89 points
C 70-79 points
Extra Credit available (not to exceed 20 points per module)
