Welcome to Mrs. Runyon's Computer Application III class. This class is designed to focus on increasing typing speed, improve touch-typing and learn the basics of the Office Applications. To start off the quarter, we are exploring the tool bars and the formatting pallet. We will be working on assignments that require students to read and follow specific directions in order to format their documents correctly. These are skills that students will be required to use throughout the semester.
Students will work through different units using a method called, Layered Curriculum.
Each layer of a unit addresses a particular level of thinking and understanding.
Layer “C” (Basic knowledge): In this layer, students will complete activities that help them gain the basic knowledge that they need to successfully complete the next two layers of the unit. While working in Layer “C”, students will meet with the teacher on a daily basis to assess the learning that has occurred.
In Layer “B” (Application): Students will choose from activities that will allow them to apply the skills learned in Layer “C”. Points are earned based on the learning that has occurred.
Layer “A” (Critical thinking): This layer will require students to perform Internet research on one of the given topics. They are then required analyze the information complete their activity using the knowledge gained in the previous two layers.
The benefits of using this model are many:
• Student-centered classroom.
• Students choose assignments that interest them and appeal to their individual learning style resulting in greater student engagement.
• Students are assessed orally during the “Basic” layer; they receive immediate feedback and can correct any errors.
• Each child receives individualized attention.
• Students are able to collaborate with their peers.
• Grades are based on learning at specific levels.
• The learning is not a mystery –your child knows what is expected and how the grade is earned.
