currently studying

SOCIAL STUDIES MAKES THE WORLD GO AROUND!!!

THE SCOPE OF SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES IS MIND BOGGLING.  WE STUDY ALL THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS WHICH INCLUDES  MAYAS, AZTECS , INCANS,  ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME.  WE STUDY MODERN MEXICO, CENTRAL AMERICA, AND SOUTH AMERICA.  WE ALSO STUDY MEDIEVIL TIMES. WE FINISH THE YEAR WITH AUSTRALIA.

FIRST QUARTER WE CONCENTRATED ON THE MAYANS, AZTECS, & INCANS. WE DID A NUMBER  OF ACTIVITIES.  WE DID A MATCHMAKER ACTIVITY WHERE PARENTS OF GROOMS SOUGHT OUT APPROPRIATE BRIDE IN MAYAN SOCIETY. WE DID A FARMING ACTIVITY WHERE STUDENTS HAD TO PLANT FIELDS OF CORN, BEANS, AND SQUASH.  THE POPULATION INCREASED SO FARMERS HAD TO FIND MORE FARMLAND TO SUPPORT THEIR GROWING  POPULATION.  BY FAR THE FAVORITE ACTIVITY WAS THE INCAN MESSENGER RUNNERS. WE DID AN OUTDOOR ACTIVITY WHERE STUDENTS WERE DIVIDED INTO 4 TEAMS. THERE WERE FOUR RUNNERS WHO HAD TO MEMORIZE A QUESTION AND THEN PASS THAT ON TO ANOTHER RUNNER. AFTER 4 PEOPLE PASSED THE QUESTION ON THE LAST PERSON HAD TO FIGURE OUT THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. THEN THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION WAS PASSED ON BY THE RUNNERS.  THE LAST PERSON WROTE THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. THEY CONTINUED THE ACTIVITY THROUGH 4 DIFFERENT QUESTIONS. THEY WERE TIMED. AFTER GOING BACK TO THE CLASSROOM WE WENT THROUGH THE QUESTIONS AND CORRECT ANSWER. THE TEAM THAT ANSWERED THE MOST QUESTIONS CORRECTLY IN THE SHORTEST AMOUNT OF TIME WON THE CONTEST. STUDENT THEN REALLY UNDERSTOOD THE JOB OF AN INCAN MESSENGER.
