Human Growth and Development

I treat the topics discussed in Human Growth and Development with the greatest of respect, maturity and integrity.   I realize that many parents are concerned about the manner at which the sensitive issues of Human Growth will be presented.  As a mother of three, including teenage daughters,  I can assure you that I will provide the information with the utmost care, concern, and professionalism.  I have taught for over 20 years in the Omaha Public Schools and I use this experience to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all of my students.

Mission Statement for Human Growth and Development

Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School offers a nine week cooperative arts course in Human Growth and Development at both the seventh and eight grade levels. These two courses follow guidelines which were recommended by a community representative task force and approved by the Board of Education of the School District of Omaha. The Human Growth and Development courses are designed to provide students with the information, decision-making skills and resources necessary to encourage thoughtful and responsible behavior, as well as to reinforce values of home and family.

The Human Growth and Development courses will cover a variety of topics, such as families, effective communication, decision-making, peer pressure, puberty, reproductive anatomy and physiology, pregnancy and child birth, family planning methods, drug awareness, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

The Goal of the Human Growth and Development program is to help our students become healthy, happy, responsible and caring adults who are able to deal positively with their sexuality and form strong families of their own in the future. We believe parents are the foremost family life educators, and the purpose of our curriculum is to supplement and support the efforts of parents. We strongly encourage you to talk to your child about human growth and development and communicate often your own values about sexuality and family issues.
