5th GRADE TECH & LIVING

WELCOME TO MRS. C'S WEBSITE!

Hello, and welcome to my official Buffett website! My name is Laura Chytka (Krenk), and I am one of the broadcasting teachers at Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School.

First, and foremost, I love working with the students and their families at Buffett! We have awesome young people, who are very creative and always try their best. It really is an honor to work with so many great kiddos!

A little about myself: This is my 11th year of teaching. I received my undergraduate degree in 1999 from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where I majored in Education and History. I also had concentrations in Gender/Multicultural Education and Film Studies. I am currently finishing my Masters degree in Secondary Education and Technology at the University of Nebraska: Omaha. I then hope to continue my graduate work in Curriculum and Instruction.

I began working for Omaha Public Schools straight out of college, and was a teacher at both Central High School and McMillan Magnet Center before moving to Buffett when it opened in 2004. I have taught oodles of subjects, including Social Studies, Language Arts, Speech and Debate, and Human Growth & Development. This will be my second year teaching television broadcasting, and while it has been a learning experience (and challenge!), I love it. Besides, how cool is it to say you teach television?!

On the personal side, I was married on December 20, 2008, so I went from Ms. Krenk to Mrs. Chytka (that's a BIG change!) I am a third-generation teacher, and my mom is currently a 6th grade Special Education teacher for Lincoln Public Schools. My brother is currently living and working in Qatar, a small country on the Arabian Peninsula in the Persian Gulf, but he will be home soon! I grew up in Lincoln, went to Southeast High School, but Omaha has become my new "hometown." I am a big trivia buff, I love to read, I try to finish crossword puzzles without cheating, I watch way too much television, and I am a big sports fan. (Go Big Red!)

This website is really a work in progress, and I continue to include more links to broadcasting sites, webquests, and other materials for student needs. Currently, I do not have homework assignments listed on this site as homework in broadcasting tends to be done in class. However, if for any reason you need to contact me, feel free to do so at my e-mail address (laura.chytka@ops.org), or by calling Buffett (402-561-6160). Thanks so much, and check back often!
