Technology

"Pervasively Transparent" is the best description of the use of technology at North. By that, we mean it is everywhere and yet it is not seen. The use of technology at North has become so engrained into our daily learning, that while visitors are struck by its presence; our students and staff don't "see" it. It is a mark of how successful our technology implementation has become. Below, you can read about some specific areas of implementation.

Email For All Students

North High was one of, if not the first, public high school in Nebraska to issue and expect students to use email. Originally born out of a building-wide examination of our strengths and weaknesses called Renewal 2000, the use of email has grown to be a core element of who we are, how we communicate and what we expect of not only students, but also staff. Viewing Course Information Online (eClass Online)

Beginning in August, 2004 under a program called "eClass Online," teachers can post, at their discretion, course syllabi, assignments and other course-related information to the web. This information is viewable by students and parents from any web browser.

Staff are not required to post information at this site. However, a growing number are doing so. In particular, the Art Department has made the decision to move all of its curriculum materials including presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint format to eClass Online. For those users without PowerPoint, there is a link in the Art Department site to a free PowerPoint Viewer.

Emailed Progress Reports

Due to a changeover to a new student information system during the summer of 2009, teachers can no longer email progress reports to students and parents.  Infinite Campus, once fully deployed, will allow students and parents to access academic information via a web portal.  There is currently no firm date for the activation of the portal.

Use of Projectors to Enhance the Delivery of Classroom Instruction

Beginning during the summer of 2004, North High started installing ceiling-mounted, LCD projectors connected to computers with multimedia capability in all classrooms. The goal of this program is to improve the delivery and retention of learning by engaging students with rich, multimedia enhanced instruction from presentations and the internet. Implementation of these projector-equipped classrooms continues moving toward a goal of installing projectors in all classrooms.

In some classes, students will see an additional requirement of using technology during classroom presentations. It is also expected that teachers will adopt more active learning styles in presenting classroom material. Rather than just "prettying" up the presentation with graphics and color, the presentation should call upon the student to become part of the learning process.

Accessing File Servers From Home

Due to a changeover in networking software over the summer of 2009, students and staff can no longer acdess files stored on our file servers.  We are working, however, to restore this service with new software. The goal is to have it up and running before the end of the 1st semester of the 2009 - 2010 school year.

Access at North

Computers at North are "pervasively transparent," that is, they are everywhere but are viewed so much as a part of our everyday use at school, that we don't give them a second thought. At North, computers are available from 6:00 AM until the building closes; in the Viking Center and Cafeteria for email access during breakfast, lunch and the study halls held there; in the Computer Center for all applications before, during and after school as well in many classrooms.

Technology Checkout

Also, since the late 1980s, North High has made computers available for student checkout. This was long before most students had their own computers at home. Today, students can, with a properly completed parent permission form, check out digital still and video cameras as well as computers. Every submitted permission form is verified with a personal phone call. Once approved, students can request a computer or camera for overnight or over-the-weekend checkout by completing the necessary form in the Computer Center. Same day requests must be submitted by 1:00 PM.

Media Technology Program

The Media Technology program allows students to explore a wide variety of computer technology applications in digital media and music. This program is only available at Omaha North.

The Cisco Networking Academy Program is only available in the Omaha Public Schools at Omaha North High. It offers students a industry-certified program in computer networking in preparation for completing the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) certification program.

Centralized Backup of files

The Computer Center maintains a daily backup of all files saved to our file servers. During a typical school year, students will maintain @ 83,000 files. Students can, if they have inadvertently deleted a file, either request a tape restore or, using NetStorage, a service only available at North, perform a web-based restore of the file by themselves from school or from home. File restoration can, in most cases, extend back to the beginning of the school year.
