Science

Features of Science

Recognizing the inter-relationships of science with mathematics, engineering, and technology, Omaha North offers a unique setting and program to combine these disciplines. Students participate in the rigor and discipline of college-level science, whether the student is interested in a science-related career or seeks to complete college science requirements before pursuing a college major in another field.

Omaha North offers more Advanced Placement science courses than any other high school in the region. Students seeking rigor may accomplish the OPS graduation requirements of Biology-Chemistry-Physics by taking a sequence of Honors Physics in 9th grade, AP Physics B in 10th grade, AP Chemistry in 11th grade, and AP Biology in 12th grade.

Unique to the Omaha area is Project Lead the Way’s Biomedical Sciences sequence.  (Link to http://www.pltw.org/Biomedical/biomedical.cfm).  North High and PLTW have developed a four-year sequence of courses which, when combined with college preparatory mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college.  PLTW Biomedical Science courses are taken concurrently with the OPS science sequence, enriching the science opportunities available to Omaha North students

"Physics First" offering for advanced freshman students allows middle school students, who succesfully completed Geometry 1-2 with a grade of A or B, can choose the Physics First science program of study. Physics First allows a student to take Physics during their freshman year and is only available at Omaha North. As sophomores, Physics First students may enroll in Advanced Placement Physics B. The final two years of the four-year sequence of courses allow students to complete the district requirements for biology and chemistry by taking the courses as Advanced Placement. Therefore, students in the Physics First seqence who score well on the College Board Advanced Placement Exams could earn college credit in three college-level courses by the end of their senior year at Omaha North High Magnet School. Note: all courses in the Advanced Placement science sequence require a total of two blocks each semester.

Advanced Placement coursework is available in:

AP Biology
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B
AP Environmental Science
