Mentoring Programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands (BBBSM)

We have many students who have applied, interviewed and been accepted as mentors to younger students in the elementary schools. If you are interested in serving as a mentor for younger children, contact the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands or North's BBBSM coordinator.

DREAM (Directing, Recruiting, Education, and Mentoring)

This mentoring program began in the Fall of 1992, under the sponsorship of the Information Technologies Department at Union Pacific Railroad. Students who have demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in business, information systems, or computer sciences are matched with Union Pacific employees. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop a positive relationship with adults who are employed in the area of computer programming and information systems. These students are also eligible for summer employment, internships., and college scholarships.

NorthStar (North Students Training for Adult Roles)

NorthSTAR is a mentoring program developed from a partnership between Omaha North High School and Mutual of Omaha - a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Omaha.

The NorthSTAR program offers students the opportunity to enhance their classroom studies and jumpstart their career by exploring different aspects of the business world.

NorthSTAR pairs North students with mentors from Mutual of Omaha's Information Services department. Students get a chance to see the "working world" firsthand and to get started down their career path.

Through monthly group activities centered around business, secondary education, community service and social events, students have the opportunity to view a variety of career options.

NorthSTAR offers students:

- Paid summer internships
- Scholarship Opportunities
- Exposure to various business and cultural environments
- Increased self-esteem and confidence
- Enhanced leadership and social skills
- Awareness of future career opportunities
- Participation in community service projects

North students and parents can get more information on the NorthSTAR program from the Omaha North High Magnet Center counseling office or by visiting Mutual of Omaha's NorthSTAR website.

Teammates

TeamMates is a mentoring program modeled after the original program begun by Tom and Nancy Osborne in 1991. They saw first hand the needs of children growing up without enough adult interaction. These youth needed someone who could talk with them, help them set goals, and reinforce basic skills, attitudes and other lessons of life. The Osborne's program emphasized building character.

For questions about our these mentoring programs, email the Mentoring Coordinator.
