Vern Ekfelt Wrestling Tournament

According to the athletic history of North High, the November 30 - December 1, 2006 tournament represents the 61st year of the Vern Ekfelt tournament! Wrestling started during the 1925-26 school year with N. V. Franklin as coach. With the coming of World War II, the sport was dropped. Vern Ekfelt came to North right after the war and revived wrestling. Mr. Ekfelt started an invitational tournament in 1946 that now bears his name and is the oldest wrestling tournament in Nebraska history. Ekfelt's teams were consistent winners!

Many coaches handled the team after Mr. Ekfelt retired in 1959. During the 1984-85 school year, Curlee Alexander cane to North after the closing of Tech High School. Four state championship teams and one state runner-up team occurred during Coach Alexander's tenure.

The wrestling program has had numerous individual state champions through the years. Last season the team was district runner-up and state runner-up. DaVaughn Perkins is a returning state champion and other medal winners from last year are Terrel McKinney and Barry McEwin.
