6 Omaha North Students Study Near Yellowstone

Three Omaha North 9th grade students attended the “Young Women and Science” program at the Teton Science School, October 26-31, 2008.  Rachael, Kayla & Mercedez were selected from 18 applicants.  Selection criteria included essays, academic performance, teacher recommendation, and an interview by a selection committee.

Each year since the early 1990’s, Omaha North has had the opportunity to send three promising young women to the Teton Science School’s “Young Women and Science” experience during the fall of their freshman year.  All expenses (including airfare, registration, food and lodging) are paid through the generous funding of Lozier Foundation.  The young women who have participated in this experience in the past have named it as one of the highlights of their learning experiences at North High.

For five days, these three North students joined about 20 other female students at an outdoor education facility in the mountains near Jackson, Wyoming.  Participants received instruction and field experiences from leading women scientists from across the United States.   Each day of the course is designed to build skills and knowledge as well as expose the students to the diversity of women pursuing scientific professions.  The course focused on the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, including exploration of disturbance and fire ecology, biotic communities, and the area’s unique wildlife.  Students in this program share group tasks such as cabin clean-up and dishes, and are asked to forego such amenities as personal electronics and junk food.  Teton Science School, founded in 1967, is located at the site of a former guest ranch, with heated dormitories and modern plumbing.  For more information about the program’s mission, philosophy, and facilities, visit [ http://www.tetonscience.org ]www.tetonscience.org.  In addition, the November 2004 National Geographic featured the Teton Science School in the ZIP CODE USA section of the magazine.
