22	Friday, May 22 is the last school day of the 2008 - 2009 school year. School resumes on August 17th with 9th-graders only. All students report on August 18, 2009.

21	Auditions for the fall musical "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown!!" will be held on May 21 in the room 134. Pick up an audition packet in room 129, 134 or download here.

20	From a press release... The Citi Foundation and the National Academy Foundation are pleased to offer the Citi Academy of Finance (AOF) Scholars Program. This prestigious program provides recipients with $20,000 in scholarship money, as well as the chance to apply for an internship with Citi in the summer of their junior year in college. This year, 15 graduating seniors from Academies of Finance will be awarded this top honor. Congratulations to Rahul Batra of Omaha North as 1 of 15 students from across the United States to receive this award for 2009.

16	Graduation is Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Additional information about the ceremony is available in the April North News newsletter (page 2)

15	Three students accepted a check for $1,000 from OPPD for their winning submission in "Project Greenflick" sponsored by OPPD. Eileen P., Nick B. and Cameron D. received the check at an award ceremony held in the Media Center on May 15th. Accepting a check for $250 was the 3rd-place team of Kaleigh Davis, Laura Salkeld and Hannah Zabka. (Photograph is pending)

13	The Eric Awards presentation will be held for all graduating seniors at 9:00 AM in the auditorium. After the ceremony, caps and gowns will be issued and the senior class photograph will be taken with Mr. Haynes. Senior Class photographs will be available for purchase at graduation for $8.00 each.

12	The 2009 annual Band and Orchestra Honors Banquet will be held on May 12 in the Viking Center at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $8.50 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

9	FINALLY: "The Ember" The school's literary magazine is in!!! Purchase your own for ONLY $3.00. Copies can be purchased in room 310. Thank you to all who submitted their work. You may pick up your original copies from Ms. Bruland in room 310. 9	The Senior One-Act directed play "Check, Please" will be presented in the auditorium on May 11, 2009 at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.

8	As of today, May 8th, the Guidance Resource Center reports that North High graduating seniors have received scholarships in the total amount of $7,900,000.

8	North NSBE Jr. Chapter Visits Union Pacific On Friday, May 8, the Omaha North High Magnet School NSBE Jr. Chapter went on a field trip to Union Pacific (UP). Along with Mr. Williams (advisor), eight of the twelve members had a chance to learn about what UP does and how it impacts our society. The students that attended were: Rashad Erwin-Ingram, Tre’Von McKay, Willie Stennis, Raquel Sturdivant, Abram Walker, and Preston Woodall. Two of our graduating seniors, Seth Quartey and Tailla Strawn, returned to school and also attended the field trip. While at UP, the students met with various engineers and learned about their experiences at UP as well as what it takes to become an engineer. The students also went on a tour of their facilities. Our two graduating seniors are attending college next year and pursuing degrees in architectural engineering and information technology. (Submitted by Mr. Williams)

7	Landmarks Kimball Prize Winners Two engineering students won first place in the Architectural Historical Omaha design competition. Sponsored by the Landmarks of Omaha Corporation, the competition seeks to raise awareness of the architecture and important buildings in our city. This year’s project centered on the Corby Theater located at 2805 North 16th street. The theater has been closed for nearly fifty years. The building needs significant repair but is a beautiful example of architecture of that period. Tailla Strawn and Justine Kohtz outlasted all OPS teams redesigning and rethinking the Corby Theater. They researched ownership and history of the building as well as the neighborhood and various businesses associated and housed in the structure. They spent hours going through Omaha non-fiction in the library. The final submission included three presentation boards; one a collage of the history of the building, one art piece created with the use of a panel from 35mm Millennium movie projector and one a historic review of the Times of the Corby Theater. Justine explained “…I researched more and went farther out of my way for this project than I’ve ever done for anything else.” And from Tailla, “This project helped me to really gain a love for discovering the historical significance of such buildings as the Corby. Nice going ladies.

SUMMER PHYSICAL OPTIONS 2009-2010 All high school athletes must have a valid physical dated after May 1st 2009 to participate in high school sports during the 2009-10 school year. The engineering & science addition is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2010.
