North's NorthSTAR group recently visited Mayor Fahey and spent time at the City County Building.  Here is a synopsis of the event from North student Elise White.

For our April NorthSTAR event we enjoyed a lunch at Spaghetti Works and a tour of the City County Building. We got to see where the City Council meets, pictures of the former mayors, and the gifts Omaha has received from our sister cities. Then we went to the Mayor's office, and it was surprising how many important people Mayor Fahey has met. The tour guide said that one of the main things he enjoys is that he gets to meet famous people, like President Obama. We also saw that the Mayor has a North ID for the class of 2009.
When we talked to the city planner he told us about the city's plans for downtown as well as how Omaha will expand in the coming decades. He showed us pictures of other cities' downtown areas and focused on Portland, Oregon's street car system. City planners would like that for Omaha. Some students asked questions and we found out that there aren't many plans for north Omaha. Mayor Fahey described what it's like being mayor and some of the funny things that happened while he was in office. Overall it was an interesting and informative event.

17 Students at North will be observing the Day of Silence on the 17th.  This is a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by many gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and allie people.  The students will echo their silence, which is caused by harassment and discrimination.  The protest is to make people think about the silence.  Words can be so hurtful and damage our students.  Many students have commited suicide because of bullying.  Students have been killed for the sexual orientation.  The hate must stop and this is one way for students to peaceful protest and to have a "voice."
