Welcome to Central High Guidance

The role of school counselors in the Omaha Public Schools is to contribute to the academic success of students by helping to remove barriers, which hinder them. Central High School’s Guidance Department offers a proactive Comprehensive Competency-Based Guidance program. Within our program, counselors deliver developmental curriculum at every grade level, teaching skills in the Academic/Educational Domain, Personal/Social Domain and the Career Domain as well as attending to the unique and individual needs of every student.

We have nine guidance counselors at Central High School. Students have opportunities to work with all nine counselors throughout the year.

Counselor Specialization. In the Omaha Public Schools, counselors specialize in guidance “domains” to bring students the most comprehensive resources available.  Counselors teach skills in classes, by areas of specialization, to ALL students throughout the year, using our standardized guidance curriculum. Counselor specialization areas are:

Academic Domain:

Our three academic/educational counselors assist all students with study skills, tutoring, and academic strategies for success. Our academic/ educational counselors are Mrs. Heckman (557-3322) , Mr. Scott (557-3327) and Mrs. Hill (557-3321).

Our academic records counselor monitors all students’ credits to track each student’s graduation requirements and coordinates credit recovery programs. Ms. Politi is our records counselor and may be reached at 557-3394.

Our academic/advanced education counselor helps students consider educational opportunities after high school, and develop strategies to reach these goals. Our advanced education counselor is Mrs. Meyer (557-3325).

Career Domain:

Our career/occupational counselor helps all students identify skills and talents related to Course work and future career opportunities. Our career counselor, Mr. Richards, is available at 557-3323.

Personal/Social Domain:

Our personal/social counselors assist with the personal development necessary for students to make a successful transition from middle school to high school. They help students learn more about themselves and about how to develop positive relationships with others. Our personal/social counselors are Ms. Cirulis (557-3324), Mr. Moore (557-3326) and Mrs. Hill (557-3321).

Assigned Counselors.  Each student is assigned a counselor according to the student's last name.  The assigned counselor may be a point of first contact for students and parents.

All counselors are on duty from 7:15 AM until 3:30 PM daily. Students may visit the guidance center before school, at lunchtime, or after school without an appointment or a pass. Students who want to see a counselor during the day must fill out a counselor appointment form in the guidance center and the appropriate counselor will send for the student as soon as possible during study hall or homeroom. Students typically will see the response counselor within twenty-four hours of the request. Counselors will not send for students during class time, and students may not come to guidance during class time except in case of emergency. In the rare case of an urgent situation, teachers may choose to send a student to see a counselor immediately. Students must always come to the guidance center from class with a pass.

We look forward to working with parents and students during this school year and we wish you a wonderful school year.

Graduation and Promotion Requirements

For Homework Assignment Requests:
We appreciate the concern of our students and parents when it is necessary to miss school and request homework assignments. The Guidance Secretaries at 557-3328 will be glad to help you with your request. We ask that you please be aware of the following guidelines:

We collect assignments for students who will be absent THREE OR MORE DAYS. Students absent only one or two days must request make-up work from teachers upon their return to class. This is much quicker than if we make the request.

Because assignments take time to gather, same day requests cannot be honored. We need at least 24 hours to get all assignments from all teachers and have them ready for you.  Messages left after 3 p.m. will be considered as being left the following day.

If your child is ill, and you are not sure if she/he will return the next day, wait until afternoon to call. We will process the request, and you may pick up the assignments between 3 and 4 p.m. the next day in the guidance office (rm 129).

The Guidance Secretary will tell you what time to expect assignments to be ready. Teachers put much effort into preparing homework requests, please be sure to pick up the assignments at the agreed upon time.  Please do not forget to pick them up. The latest possible pick-up time is 4 p.m.  Homework not picked up will be returned to teachers so that the teacher will know it has not been picked up.
