When asked what comes to mind when they hear the words “spring break,” students responded with everything from vacation, sleep, no homework, friends, and fun to swimming, stargazing, freedom, sleepovers, and sun. Whatever spring break means to you, the week off from school is just around the corner for students and teachers of Burke High. The much anticipated week of March 22 - 26 is fast approaching and students have a plethora of activities planned.

Ever wondered who’s the better driver, guys or girls? Burke girls seem to think that girls are better drivers, while the guys think they’re more skilled behind the wheel.

       As this 2010 school year quickly winds down, seniors all over America are beginning to realize how close adulthood is to becoming a reality. One choice has brought about a lot of discussion in families and among friends: enrolling in the military.

Just a few weeks of practice remain for the cast and crew of Footloose to put the finishing touches on the show. The musical is set to show Feb. 25, 26, and 27. The cast and crew are excited, but tired, as extra weekend rehearsals and longer hours have been added to make up for lost time because of snow days earlier on.

When Burke students attend Tuesday night basketball games, they often notice a group of 10 girls hard at work in the cafeteria, oblivious to anything but the 6-foot poles they are spinning. The girls transition effortlessly from tosses to turns and back again. They are the Burke High Winter Guard; a group of dedicated and talented students who spend six hours a week perfecting a difficult routine.

The large number of fast food restaurants and the importance of a car are two of the biggest differences German exchange student F. Langer has had to adjust to.

After the hustle and bustle of marching season, winter rolls along with snow and winter drum line. During the winter season there are drum lines that compete by themselves, without the band. There are many categories a line can enter in the scholastic, independent, open, and world. In Omaha, there are only two independent lines, Dojo Percussion and 402 Percussion compete during the winter season.

Are you stressed from school, too much homework, too busy with sports? Stress is common for teenagers, usually because their plate is too full with schoolwork, sports, and jobs.

Here’s the first thing you want to know, the weather is getting better. 

A report published online by the new England journal of medicine discussed a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, saying that there is evidence such a measure would help to reduce rates of diet related diseases and health care costs.

From sledding to drinking a cup of hot chocolate, winter is an exciting season to spend with ones you love. Sledding down a steep hill, throwing snowballs at friends, building forts, and making snow angels are just some of the activities to enjoy on a snow day.

“Tis the season to be jolly in Honors Earth Science,” senior C. Cain said. The reason for this holiday cheer is that J. Little’s Honors Earth Sciences class is conducting an ‘experiment’.

As 2009 nears its end, a new decade is about to begin. Jan. 1, 2010, may feel a lot like Dec. 31, 2009, to some people, for other, the news year will be a chance to make some changes. Seniors are looking forward to graduating in five short months, but in the mean time, short term goals can aid in accomplishing those small tasks needed to help with the larger one.

With the lack of warm weather and inability to go outside, people are in desperate need of physical exercise around this time of year.

It's normal to have times when you feel "down" every once in a while. But, if the “down” feeling lasts more than a few weeks, and you're having trouble in your daily life because of emotional stress, you may be suffering from clinical depression.

When you’re sitting at home cuddled up next to fire drinking a nice cup of hot cocoa, the only thing that could make life any better is to watch a classic family holiday movie.

 Winter is just around the bend; have you picked out your winter gear yet? No, I’m not just talking about the traditional coat and boot combo. I’m talking about the new winter fashions picking up speed around the nation.

 Did you know an average of 115 students enter the nurse’s office in one day? Want to avoid being one of them?  The number one thing students can do to stay out of the nurse’s office is to wash your hands.

Being a lawyer isn’t as carefree as television depicts it as. It takes dedication, critical thinking, and extra schooling.

Being a personal trainer and an athletic trainer is really fun, according to M. Boisen. 

“My favorite part of the job is working with the dog, Rex,” said E. Olsen,  a canine officer in Douglas County.

Graphic design is a carer  that has been around for awhile,  and the employment rate is expected to grow.  Tom Gulizia owns Aladdin Screen Printing and Embroidery and works as a graphic artist for his firm.

Everyone’s a freshman at one point in his life.  A time when you are introduced to a new school that’s almost twice the size of your old one, suddenl your classes are harder and teachers expect more from you, and the worst part --you’re the youngest kids in school again, therefore the easiest to push around.

The music will be pounding, lights flashing, and everyone dancing.

  “Everything is going to be centered on Egypt and the Nile,” Senior Senate sponsor Jay Thiltgen said, “There will be pyramids, palm trees, camels, tents, that kind of stuff.”

Throughout movie history there has been an evolution of dance. From ballroom to swing to disco to break dancing, there have been many famous movie scenes or entire movies themselves all about the art of dance. 

 

 In these upcoming months, Omaha will become the hot spot for concerts in the area. Many bands in genres from metal to pop are making their way to Omaha in hopes of drawing in a big crowd, and with the artists that are scheduled to appear, they will get just that. If you’re into heavy metal, Five Finger Death Punch will surely not disappoint. Their new album “War Is The Answer” will be promoted, however they are sure to perform songs off their older albums as well. While their tour kicked off Sept. 18, their Omaha concert will take place at Sokol Underground on Sept. 30. The show will start at 8 p.m., and tickets are going for a mere $20.

College deadlines are just around the corner for current seniors, but juggling applications with scholarship forms and school work can seem daunting.

As the autumn weather blows in, and school falls into a rhythm, the entertainment remains far from dull. October makes some good promises in both the movie industry and the TV world. With such new releases as The Invention of Lying, Shutter Island, The Stepfather, and a remake of The Nightmare Before Christmas, October will be full of thrills and chills on and off the big screen. And as popular TV shows including House and Bones come back with all new episodes, there’s even more reason to stay entertained all month long.

Knowing what to do and how to prepare for an interview can be an extremely daunting task.

With the school year almost over, many students will be taking more hours at work or looking for a summer job.

Looking for a job in these economic times can be tough, but local teenagers can reach their goal with the assistance of the 4^th annual Teen Job Fair.

 When I think of summer songs I imagine myself driving and singing along to the best songs of summer. This game allows you to enjoy an almost endless amount of summer tunes to drive or frolic outside to once you figure out which chorus goes to which song! Have fun!  

On March 17, Burke’s musically inclined students will show off their talents in a variety of ways. The orchestra, band, Madrigal Choir, Concert Choir, and Jazz Band will all take the stage to debut their District music competition material.

"Sing us a song Mr. Piano Man!” The Billy Joel lyric will almost certainly be uttered when the soon-to-be 60 musician walks onto the stage of the Qwest Center Arena on May 12. The legendary singer/songwriter will join forces with the iconic Elton John for one night here in Omaha Nebraska! One can only hope that the two will have some sort of dueling piano moment as the two has made their millions with their skills on the ivory keys.

Hey Nickelback fans out there-great news! Nickelback will be coming to Omaha, Tuesday, March 17 at the Qwest Center. The band, headed by Chad Kroeger, is sure to rock out with current hits “Gotta Be Somebody” and “Something in Your Mouth”. But don’t worry fans of old, the band will most likely playing their break-through hit “How You Remind Me” and other staples like “Far Away”, “Photograph”, and “Rockstar”.

Cheating can lead to extremely unfortunate events such as losing a boyfriend, rejection to college admission, or withdrawal of hard-earned recommendation letters

   It’s that time of year. Local weathermen begin to declare, “Better put the winter coats in the closet, spring is right around the corner!” It’s a ray of hope saving us from the harsh, unforgiving winter. The weather is warming up, and although it may still be early to start blasting the Beach Boys and heading to the swimming pools, there are still some activities you can do to take advantage of the nice weather.

Ladies, prom will be here sooner than we’re ready, and there’s still so much to do! Find a date or a friend to go with. Make dinner and transportation plans. Then, the finishing touches: a dazzling hair style, shoes, the optional matching handbag, and most importantly…the dress!

For some reason or another, it is difficult to keep a New Year’s resolution. Procrastinators still put things off. Liars still let one slip. Calorie counters still encounter cupcakes.

So what makes it so hard to keep these little promises?
