Burke High Library Media Center
The Burke High Library Media Center located on the north end of the building is the heart of learning in the building. The networked Library Solution™ catalog, allows patrons of the Burke Library Media Center the ability to search the entire Burke and Omaha Public School’s collection of library materials online. There are over 12,000 print and non-print items in the Burke Library. The Burke Library Media Center also subscribes to over 20 different periodicals and the Omaha World Herald.
The Burke Library Media Center’s electronic research area has 26 networked computers, an LCD projector, and a smartboard. These computers are used by students and staff members to complete school related assignments, and allow access to the districts collection of electronic references. Worldbook's Online Encyclopedia, Ebsco, Wilson Web, First Search, Merriam-Webster Online Collegiate Dictionary, and newspapers from across the United States are just a few of the resources that are available on the media center’s computers. A collection of CD-ROMs on various topics is also available for student use.
Mrs. Courtney Pentland is the Library Media Specialist. She is assisted by paraprofessionals Ms. Cheryl Koziol and Ms. Laurie Miille. This team works hard at keeping the library an up-to-date, efficient hub of learning for the Burke High School community.
It is the goal of the library media center staff to ensure that all students become information literate. Information literacy is the ability to locate, access, comprehend, evaluate, and apply information in and from a variety of formats in an ethical manner. To achieve these goals, we work closely with teachers and students to create an atmostphere of learning that promotes information literacy skills students can draw upon throughout their lives.
