BURKE HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
2005-2006 RULES AND REGULATIONS
REQUIREMENTS TO PASS PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES
|
1.
|
Injuries/Physical Impairment/Health Related Conditions:
Our physical education curriculum is based on participation. Credit is earned based on the student being physically present, in a uniform, and being capable of performing basic physical education activities. If a student is physically incapable of performing basic functions in that particular activity for more than a period of 10 school days in one semester, that student will be recommended for removal from class. This, of course, follows the OPS Ten-Day Absence Policy. It maintains a fair and impartial standard of earning credit. In the best interest of the student’s health, we encourage good, open communication among all parties; student, parent, teacher, and doctor. Many situations relating to this area can be individually arranged for satisfying credit. Clarification of what is and is not physically possible is important. Often times all can agree on how to maintain credit without harming the student’s health. However, sometimes the limitations and class time missed are too numerous to adequately earn credit. Prompt communication with the teacher and the Department Chairperson is essential.
|
|
2.
|
Absences: Class Participation:
The O.P.S. 10-Day Absence Policy must be followed which states, “A semester or term absence of more than 10 days from any class, for any reason, will mean loss of credit, regardless of other academic performance.” We offer all students the opportunity to make up class participation points (usually 10 points per class), when they have been absent for most any reason. We strongly encourage students who are absent to take the initiative to successfully restore their class participation points promptly.
Participation Make-Up: Students can use study hall time, zero hour time, or after school time to make up a class. Most students will use study hall time. The teachers must be totally aware of the student’s plan (#1-initial grading teacher, #2-make-up teacher and #3-study hall teacher). Students must follow this step-by-step procedure:
1. Student initiates the process by getting a pass from Teacher #1 at his/her convenience, usually after class is over. Permission may or may not be granted, based on consultation with Teacher #2, especially if this student was uncooperative on a previous occasion.
2. Student must have this pass when they enter study hall the next day .. otherwise he/she starts over. Teacher #3 may or may not allow student to leave based on previous behavior. Once released, the student must report immediately to the gym and/or locker room.
3. Student must be in a proper uniform and must follow all instructions of Teacher #2. #2 decides if credit should be granted.
4. Student must verify the successful completion of this make-up to both Teacher #1 and #3. Students have 2 weeks to attempt to make up the previous absences. No make-up will be allowed the last 7 school days of a semester.

Proper Attire for Physical Education Classes
There will not be a fee for Physical Education at Burke for the 2005-2006 school year. Students will not be required to wear the Burke Physical Education t-shirt or the Burke Physical Education shorts. However, being properly dressed for a Burke Physical Education class is very similar to the
guidelines of past years. Students must be safely and appropriately dressed for vigorous activity. The intent of rules and guidelines for proper attire is for the best possible educational experience for all students. Our intent is for all students to have an effective Physical Education class in reference to safety, hygiene and performance. All students must maintain their efforts and focus on the objective and goals of the Physical Education curriculum.
1. T-shirts (cotton recommended) with sleeves. Tank tops, half t-shirts, any material that is considered “see through” is not allowed. All designs, printed or artistic, material on the t-shirt is subject to the approval of the Burke P.E. Department, and the Burke High School Administration. The t-shirt should not be torn, ripped, defaced or altered on any day of gym class.
2. Shorts with an elastic band and/or drawstring. A “standard pair of gym shorts” would be a pair without zippers, without pockets, mid-thigh or longer. Weave and stitching cannot be “see through” and any printed or artistic designs or labels on the shorts are subject to the approval of the Burke Physical Education Department and the Burke High Administration.
3. Sweat clothes (shirt or pants) will only be acceptable if worn in addition to the daily routine shirt and short that has been approved by the Physical Education Department. Sweatclothes are permitted for the activities that are going outside the building on any day. Sweatclothes are also subject to the same restrictions and approval guidelines that apply to the t-shirt and shorts.
4. Proper gym shoes are necessary for the safety and performance of all students, as well as the proper care of the gym floor. A standard gym shoe such as basketball, cross training, walking, tennis or volleyball would all be acceptable. Footwear without toes are heels are unacceptable. Shoes with a raised heel or sole are unacceptable. We would recommend shoes with sufficient tread for quick change of direction and shoes that do not come off the foot easily. Socks are part of proper Physical Education attire. All footwear for Physical Education students are subject to the approval of the Physical Education staff.
5. Other guidelines of proper attire or items that are not permitted in the Physical Education class: a. Jewelry such as rings or earrings that hang are not allowed, as well as watches, necklaces and bracelets. b. Food or drink, snacks, candy, or other food and drink items are not allowed. c. Any electronic device, i.e. radio, pager, phone, CD player, tape player, are all prohibited. d. Students should not bring any make-up items or items for grooming to gym class.
6. Students must be in proper Physical Education attire on a daily basis. The Physical Education Department would recommend having more than one t-shirt and/or pair of shorts that is acceptable because of the need for routine laundering. Routine cleaning is not an excuse for not being in proper gym attire. Proper Physical Education attire every day is part of the students’ grade. Students are responsible for securing their gym attire in their Physical Education lockers so that the attire is available on a daily basis. Please refer to the “Grading Guidelines” for more information on proper attire in Physical Education.

Tardies:
With our wide scope of activities (some students in the pool, some in the weight room and still others outdoors), it is the responsibility of each students to be punctual and keep up with all procedures. Having your uniform ready to go and knowing your combination is a must. A student is tardy if he/she is not in the Locker Room when the bell rings. Once in the locker room, it is still the student’s responsibility to report to his/her appointed area for role call. Students could be tardy in either case. Repeated tardies by student disrupt the efficient administration of our curriculum. Burke High Policy state that 5 tardies to any class will equal one absence. Our department deducts 5 points daily from the daily participation grade for each tardy. Detentions are assigned on the third tardy and parental contacts are attempted. All forms of behavior modification for tardies are intended to help the students develop in self-reliance, self-discipline and strength of character. No excuses are accepted. Should a teacher detain a student, he/she must get a pass from that teacher.

Physical Education Grading Guideline
All teachers follow the O.P.S. Absence Policy and have a system for deducting points for the following problems: improper uniform, tardies, insubordination or refusing to participate during exercises, aerobic work or weight room activity. In our General Physical Education classes, grades are computed every nine weeks. Every quarter grade includes two activity grades and a daily participation grade.
Activity Grade
All teachers evaluate students on the basis of a daily participation grade, skill development grade and a written test grade. Each area may have a different priority of importance depending on the activity involved. The daily participation grade may include deductions for:

Swim Classes:
A 4-week unit of swimming is required for all General Physical Education students. Classes are either all girls or all boys. Students can bring their own swim suits, subject to the approval of the swim instructor. Girls cannot wear two-piece swim suits. All swim students are allowed extra time after class to get dressed. Any and all reasons for a postponement or actual cancellation of this requirement must be signed by a doctor and submitted to the Physical Education Department sometime in the first 30 days of the school year. These types of excuses should not arrive the same day that the student’s swim unit is scheduled to start or thereafter. Students not only fail swimming but could also endanger their entire Physical Education credit when they fail to be in the proper swim uniform and/or cooperate with the swim instructor. Students are never required to do things beyond their level of ability.
