ENSEMBLE TOPS TWO COMPETITIONS
Ensemble, Burke High School's select show choir, is having a very successful competition season, performing an Egyptian inspired program of music and dance from the Broadway musical, "Aida". On Saturday, March 22, Burke competed with schools from Iowa and Nebraska at North High's Viking Cup. Ensemble not only won the Best in Class trophy for best performance by a large school but also was awarded the Grand Champion Viking Cup for best overall performance of the day.
The following Tuesday the group performed at the Northeast Jazz Festival in Norfolk, Neb. Thirty-one show choirs from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota competed, with Ensemble again taking the Best in Class trophy as well as the Sweepstakes Trophy for best show choir performance of the day. Superior solo performances were awarded to Abby E., Kelly C., Alex V., Gwen O., Jacque W., Eric A., Nick T., and Liz T.. The group will culminate their competition season at District Music Contest at North High on Saturday, April 26 with an 8:30 a.m. performance.
Ensemble is an ambassador group for Burke High, performing at the fall and eighth grade open houses, and doing a spring recruiting tour of OPS elementary schools. In December, the group performs an entertaining and inspirational Christmas show across Omaha at corporation, club and church parties and meetings, and at assisted living facilities. Ensemble also sings for the Martin Luther King Day celebration and each year at graduation. These talented musicians are a positive asset to Burke, with their outreach program to both adults in the community and future high school students.
Ensemble members are: Eric A., Kelly C., Pat D., Abby E., Katherine F., Libby G., Miguel J., Kathleen K., Jonathan L., Brad M., Gwen O., Nikki R., Antwan S., Kyle S., Nick T., Liz T., Tim V., Chris V., Alex V., Lynn W., and Jacque W..
Accompanists are Victory Sedlicek on piano and Symi G-C. on trap set. Ensemble is directed by Merlin Lempke.

What is F.A.S.T.?
The Fine and Performing Arts Department has established a new parent/teacher group called the Fine Arts Support Team, or F.A.S.T. The purpose of F.A.S.T. is to support the Vocal Music, Drama, and Art departments for both the student and the staff in many capacities. Like most "booster" groups of this nature, we will of course endeavor to raise monies for these departments to help finance projects not covered by the current OPS budget. Other functions include assisting the teachers with promotion of art exhibits and sale of art projects, plays, vocal music performances, and the musical.
What can you do to help?
Listed below is just a sampling of the many functions you can volunteer for!
