This course is designed for the beginning ESL student. The focus of this course will be to develop basic communication skills, a beginning English language vocabulary, and a primary understanding of grammatical structures. This course is typically for a first-year English language learner. This class must be taken concurrently with ESL Reading 1-2.
ESL Reading 1-2

This course is designed to build reading skills in English for the beginning ESL student. The focus will be to provide successful experiences in reading English at a beginning level, while building skills in recognizing basic sight words, using context clues and prior knowledge to derive word meaning, identifying main idea, summarization of reading passages, and dictionary usage. This class must be taken concurrently with ESL 1-2.
ESL 1-2 Lab

This course is for beginning ESL students concurrently enrolled in ESL 1-2 and ESL Reading 1-2. Students will participate in an extension and enrichment of the content of ESL1-2 and ESL Reading 1-2, with an emphasis in writing skills development.
Social Studies Prep

This course provides the beginning ESL student with basic background information about U.S. history, geography, and government. This course develops study skills, builds vocabulary, and leads to an understanding of key events and historical figures, preparing students for participation in the high school social studies curriculum. This course is usually taken with ESL 1-2.

This course provides the beginning ESL student with an introduction to technology. Students will develop vocabulary related to technology and be introduced to use of the computer for a variety of purposes.

This course is designed for the intermediate ESL student. The focus of this course will be to continue the development of communication skills, English language vocabulary, and understanding of grammatical structures. Successful completion of learning goals from ESL 1-2 or demonstration of equivalent skills is required for registration in this course. This course must be taken concurrently with ESL Reading 3-4.
ESL Reading 3-4

This course is designed for intermediate ESL students to improve reading skills. Emphasis is on developing comprehension skill through fluency, summarizing and sequencing events in a reading passage, recognizing cause and effect, and using systematic strategies to locate information from textbooks, charts, graphs, and tables. Successful completion of learning goals from ESL Reading 1-2 or demonstration of equivalent skills is required for registration in this course. This course must be taken concurrently with ESL 3-4.
ESL 3-4 Fundamentals

This course is designed for the ESL student who needs to continue the study of English, but will benefit from a review of concepts from ESL 1-2. This course will continue the development of basic communication skills, English language vocabulary, and understanding of grammatical structures. Students may advance to ESL 3-4 or to ESL 5-6 after completion of this course, depending on individual student achievement.
ESL 3-4 Reading Fundamentals

This course is designed for the ESL student to improve reading skills not fully mastered in ESL Reading 1-2. Emphasis is on developing comprehension through fluency, summarizing and sequencing events in a reading passage, recognizing cause and effect, and using systematic strategies to locate information from textbooks, charts, graphs, and tables which may be used in mainstream classes. Students may advance to ESL 3-4 or to ESL 5-6 after completion of this course, depending on individual student achievement.

This course is designed for advanced ESL students who have attained adequate control of basic communication, but whose ability to communicate sophisticated ideas and comprehend subtleties of language is limited. Focus is on the development of higher level oral proficiency as well as written composition skills. Successful completion of learning goals from ESL 3-4 or demonstration of equivalent skills is required for registration in this course.
ESL Tutorial

Prerequisites: Must be current ESL student
This non-credit section offers ESL students support for other credit courses. Tutorial assistance is offered in individualized settings, with instruction available in identified need areas.
