Demon’s Souls is the newest RPG title for the PS3 and is quite astounding even for the flaws it has. The graphics utilize the PS3 capability the best of its ability and will blow you back when you see how stunning the visuals are. Blood, fire, explosions, and magic all have great visuals and it’s almost like you’re there slashing and blowing things up inside your screen. The closest comparison I can make is a medieval Fallout 3.
The story behind Demon’s Souls is that King Allant XII of Boletaria found a way to channel the power of souls, with this power he brought unknown prosperity to his kingdom until one day a black fog covered their land cutting them off from the outside world and no one could leave. The aging King Allant awoke the Old One, a great beast that lay beneath the Nexus, a safe haven for those searching for souls, and unleashed soul-craving demons onto Boletaria.
The game play mechanics are pretty easy to grasp, with your left stick controlling movement and the right controlling the camera, your L1 button can block or attack depending on what you’re holding but the R1 and R2 buttons are your primary attack buttons. Healing is done similarly to other RPG’s where you find or buy heal items that improve your health.
A cool multiplayer feature for the game is the ability to invade someone’s game. When you invade a game you become a Black Phantom and you must kill the other person before they can hunt you down and do the same and co-op with friends is non-existent due to the Soul Sign allowing you to only invite players from your world.
Along with soul signs to invite others to your game you’ll also find hints left by developers and other players that will help you in your quest to destroy the Old One. These can be helpful, hurtful, or simple dumb but reading them can be rewarding at times and when you return to the nexus after slaying a demon use its soul wisely because you won’t be able to exchange it back if there’s a more powerful one you want later on.
A major flaw though is the fact that you can’t invite your friend to co-op with you but instead you have to find Soul Signs and summon a person unknown to you to fight with. In my opinion this form of co-op isn’t the best, some of you may disagree and like meeting and fighting with these new people.
If you’re a dedicated fan of RPG’s you’ll become infatuated with how much fun you can have even if you can’t game with friends, so if you love RPG’s I highly recommend that you buy this and stick it into your collection.
