When one recalls comics, they usually think of were Superman, Batman, or Spiderman. The good guys duke it out with some strange creature, and the classic villains return. The good guys always have some sort of connections to help them get by. Superman and Spiderman both worked on a newspaper, and Batman was just freaking rich. They always won.
But what if there were superheroes that didn’t fit the mold such as these classic heroes did? Heroes with dark pasts and even darker hearts? And no, we’re not talking Wolverine here.
Enter in the Umbrella Academy. Seven of them adopted by a crazy guy who wanted to ‘save the world’ by using these children. It kind of freaks the public out, cause they don’t know what from.
So the story doesn’t really start until the guy who adopted all of them dies. Kind of sad, but he was a jerk anyway, so they were kind of glad he died. But the seven siblings have parted ways. Luther’s on the moon, Diego’s doing the shadowy ‘good-guy-who-looks-and-acts-like-a-bad-guy’ thing, Ben’s dead, Klaus is in an asylum, The Boy’s somewhere in the time stream, and Allison and Vanya left to lead somewhat normal lives. But they don’t go by these names – they go by numbers. It’s actually long and complicated, so just go read the freaking comic.
So, life goes on, people die, there are some explosions, the end of the world, and all the normal jazz. I’m not going to deep with this one – I’ll just let you guys have at it.
Some are drawn by the author, Gerard Way. Yep, the guy from My Chemical Romance made a comic – and it’s a hit. There’s even talk about a movie, which promises to be as good as the comic. In fact, when you think about the lyrics, and the whole comic itself, it makes a lot of sense.
The writing is superb, and the art, thanks to Gabriel Bà, represents the comic better than any other artist could. It’s amazingly detailed and on the whole, extraordinary.
So, to not go read this comic would not only be a shame, but you would be deprived of the comic experience that some have been only to find in The Umbrella Academy. Really, all I want to do is make sure you guys aren’t going to suddenly hop on the bandwagon when the movie comes out and it’s a hit. I don’t want another Twilight here . . .
