Last Friday the Benson Football team did something that it has not done since 2001, that is go to the state playoffs. That’s right; the Bunnies will be going to the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
There is still one more game left in the regular season for the Bunnies this year, but regardless members of the team are still happy about earning a trip to the post season. Especially the seniors who have been a part of the program for four years and have not had more than one win in each of their seasons.
“It feels good”, said senior lineman Tyler Thompson. “It is exciting to see what our hard work can do.”
“It feels great”, said senior lineman Matt Miners. “I feel like I am playing a part in something that Benson has not done in forever.”
Although players are pleased with making the playoffs, they were confident at the beginning of the year that this season would be the year that things would turn around.
“I felt like we were going to the playoffs since MG camp this summer when we were able to take on any team and put up a fight”, said Miners.
But nobody on the roster is going overboard with joy. The Bunnies still have one more game left in the regular season against the Omaha Northwest Huskies, and although they are winless this season nobody wants to look past them.
“This week is going to be like any other day”, said Miners “We are not done with the season just because we clinched a playoff spot, we are still looking for another win, I’m ready for this week’s game, but then again I’m ready for any game.”
If the bunnies win this week’s game against Northwest then they will most likely get a higher seed come playoff time.
Hopefully the success of this season is a sign of better things to come in the future for Benson Football.
