The sound of the crowd roaring on the visitor’s side can be heard blocks down from the stadium. The team can’t be stopped. They are jumping up and down, with no doubt in mind. The hype can’t be felt all over that side of the field. The final announcement of the game: “Bunnies 46, Packers 12”.
The Benson High Bunnies won their first football game of the season on Friday night. The sight found during the game was unforgettable. But, this game wasn’t just monumental because of the season; it was also Coach Heuertz first win of his coaching career.
“I was happy for the kids,” said Heuertz. “They have put a lot of hard work in and they keep going hard.”
Throughout the whole week before the game, the members of the team could be heard throughout the halls and the classrooms. “We’re gonna whoop ‘em!” or “Man, it’s going down” are just some of the words that could be heard. The whole school was rethinking everything that had been said earlier about the team being terrible and not being able to win a single game.
“We showed everyone that we can win,” said sophomore Wilson Villi.
The team and the crowd were very energetic throughout the whole game after the first touchdown. The team was cheering after every play and they congratulated each other after every touchdown that was made. It was very obvious that the team came ready to play that night. It was not the same team that was on the field during the season’s first game.
“We played like a team,” said Heuertz. “Every week we keep getting better and it shows.”
One of the biggest things that the team did to clutch that win was something that they knew needed to be done to win any game. The team came together and played as a family. They kept each other up and didn’t stop it.
“We came together until the finish,” said sophomore Dylan Mustoe. “We never let up no matter what and we kept each other motivated.”
Even though this outstanding win made a big impact on the team, the coaches, and the whole school, the team didn’t stop anything for it. The team knew that it was a big deal and that it changed a lot of things, such as thoughts about Benson and the football team. They didn’t let it change anyway that the team worked, though. The very next day the team was right back at work again.
“We celebrated and the kids were happy,” said Heuertz. “But on Saturday we went right back to work at 7:30 to practice.”
The team realizes that they have to keep this playing and hard work going, though. They still have the game against Northwest and then most likely the playoffs. It will be a great chain to keep an eye on and pay attention to. The team needs more support than ever now as they get ready to prove to the whole state that Benson High football is made up of way more than meets the eye.
