It all started with “You ain’t nothin but a hound dog!” At least for me it did. It’s been blasted through the radio for almost 60 years and it’s here to stay, however, the quality has, in my opinion, deteriorated since the melt your face off concerts of the ‘70s. That’s right folks. I’m talking about Rock n’ Roll.
Although the ‘50s and ‘60s is when rock n’ roll really got its start, I think the true age of rock was in the 1970s.
When I think of rock n’ roll, I think of all of the hard core concerts, where there were electrifying guitar solos, and the lead singer would roll around on stage with his microphone. A head-banging good time, through the lens of I Love the ‘70s anyway.
Since the days of Queen, Def Leppard, and ACDC, this classic, American style of music hasn’t been done justice.
Today, there has been a totally new focus on music. Hip-hop is now the new rock n’ roll and popular songs have even incorporated some typical rock sounds such as the electric guitar. But it still can’t compare to the raw rock n’ roll of the ‘70s. Instead of Led Zeppelin, we have Lil’ Wayne. In place of The Rolling Stones, there’s Jay-Z.
I’m not trying to say that one style is better than the other, but where has rock n’ roll gone? Sure we have Green Day and My Chemical Romance, but they tend to border more on the alternative side.
Not that each generation has sported its own musical flare. In the ‘70s, it was rock n’ roll, ‘80s was pop, ‘90s was light rock, and today we have hip-hop.
I guess all I’m trying to say is let’s not forget the stellar music of our past. It’s like that old girl scout song. Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver, and the other’s gold. Rock n’ roll is golden and we would do well to keep its tradition stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.
