High School Approaches to Learning

Generalizes Learning

Instructional Level
High School (Grades 9-12)

Which Approach to Learning is not present?
Generalizes learning to situations beyond the classroom.

What have you observed?

The student cannot give examples of how skills are used outside the classroom and does not desire to particiape in interdisciplinary activities (i.e., writing in math, applying math in science). Interpersonal skills learned in the classroom are not applied in other areas of the school (cafeteria, halls, before and after school).

What are the suggested methods?

  1. Provide students with interdisciplinary assignments, projects, classes and activities to demonstrate how several concepts or disciplines are needed to complete a task.
  2. Teach an academic concept and reinforce the concept with a practical/applicable assignment or activity.
  3. Show the relationship between courses in school and careers where those courses are required.
  4. Present a multimedia project using more than one academic discipline.
  5. Provide the student with rationales for the concepts being taught.
  6. Whenever possible, let the student pose problems encountered in everyday life, and use these problems in teaching and practice.
