So much happens in First Grade! Because of this, parents as well as children may have some apprehensions about what will happen. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills, as he/she is developmentally ready. It is important for your child to know that we are working together to help them as much as possible. Staying involved in your child’s education is the key to a successful year!
Classroom Notes:
- Fluent by Friday folders (yellow) are sent home on Monday. During the first and third quarters, starting after Labor Day, a reading story will be sent home. Please practice reading the story each night and answer the questions on the back. Sign the parent sheet and send it back to school on Friday in the Fluency/Facts folder.
- Math Facts by Friday: During the second and fourth quarters, math flashcards (addition and subtraction) will be sent home to practice during the week. Sign the parent sheet and send the Fluency/Facts Folder back on Friday. You may keep the flashcards to practice at home.
-
Green Take-Home folder is sent home every day. It has the behavior calendar for the month and any homework for the next day. Please make sure that this is returned to school every day and that you check it each night.
-
Behavior expectations: School, class, and playground rules are posted and will be reviewed quite often. All rules need to be followed at all times in order to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. Each child starts with a clean slate each day (a green card). If they break a rule a verbal warning is given. If the problem continues, a card is turned to yellow as a visual warning. If problems still continue, an orange card is pulled and a time-out is given in the classroom or a neighboring classroom and loss of recess time will occur. If problems still arise, a red card is turned and, in some instances, they will be sent to the PAC room and/or office referral will be written. The students also have the opportunity to turn a card for excellent behavior. If they are performing above and beyond, they will be asked to change their card to purple. Students who exhibit good behavior will be recognized at the end of the month. Their behavior calendar will be stamped each day, so you know how their day went. Please initial it each day.
- Birthdays: Students may bring store bought treats on their birthdays if you wish. They will pass them out (usually) the last 15 minutes of the day. Please do not send invitations for private parties to school to pass out. Feelings get hurt if all are not invited. If the entire class is being invited, you may send invitations to school.
- Book Orders: Scholastics books orders are sent home each month. If you would like to order, you can send a check payable to Scholastic or you can order online. The website is www.scholastic.com/clubsordering. The class username is frahmsclass and the class password is bookorder.
-
Dismissal: I will walk the bus riders to their buses and then wait by the front door with the students being picked up by parents. We begin walking out at 3:45…being on time is appreciated and prevents your child from needless worry.
-
Read to and with your child everyday, if possible. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at school, 572-0130. You may also email me at bonnie.frahm@ops.org . I am so fortunate to be teaching at Springville, working with the best parents and students. Thank you for sharing your child with me this year! Together we will have a very successful year.
