Welcome to Ms. Harris's Fifth Grade Website
Minimize

Hello, Welcome to our class site. Fifth grade is a wonderful time for our youngsters and we are excited about sharing it with you. There are eight boys and eight girls in our class this year. Our younsters are establishing habits that will enable them to be lifelong learners and teachers. We challenge students go think beyond the literal through the development of higher level thinking skills.

Reading: Students are reading to learn. This skill entails being strategic readers, who comprehend, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate texts. Students are encouraged to read a variety of texts from, nonfiction (magazines, biographies, informational), to fiction( realistic, historical, science, fairytales and fantasies). Instilling good phonic, vocabulary and self help strategies will help our young people immensely.

Math: Fifth grade math affords students the opportunity to stretch their thinking and reasoning skills as they learn to solve multi-step problems. Real life word problems and every fifth grader's favorites: decimals and fractions.

Science: Students are learning science concepts that expand and deepen their understanding of the world around them. The topics we study are: ecosystems, light and sound, and weather. The science curriculum is structured in a ways that engages students in experiments and hands on activities along with opportunities to anayze and make connections.

Social Studies: This year we learn about American history.

Writing: Fifth grade writing is all about descriptions! Students are challenged to descirbe people, places, things, memories even themselves. Students also work through their writing through the Writing Process, a structured sequence of writing activities.
