World Math Day started here in Nebraska on Tuesday, March 3 at 5:00 AM (New Zealand was the host this year so it officially started there at midnight on March 4). The competition ran for 48 hours so it closed here at 5:00 AM on Thursday, March 5.

World Math Day consisted of an online competition with students all over the world competing with their basic math facts. I registered students by age and after the students practiced a few times the system ranked them by their ability. Then when they played, they were matched with 3 other students real time around the world for a 1 minute math quiz. They earned points each time they played.

 During the month of February students were allowed to log on and practice. Their enthusiams was really been fun to watch. Students could log on at any time from any computer connected to the Internet to practice.

During the two days of competition, I reserved the computer labs.  Students were allowed to come during their Acceleratated Math time or any free time they had to join in the competition.

 

Here are some of the results from that 48 hour period of time:

  • Total Questions Correctly Answered 119,535
  • Total Time 5,681 Minutes

  • Total Number of Students who Participated 138

  • Average Improvement in Basic Facts 171%
