Reading/Langage Arts

This reading page is to give you some insight as to what your child is learning in reading/language arts in Mrs. Kabat's room as well as give you some ideas to use at home to follow up with lessons/activities done in the classroom.

1. READ TO YOUR CHILD DAILY!!! This is the MOST important thing that you can do daily with your child. Even if it is only 10 or 15 minutes per day - read to them. Let them pick out a story for you to read with them. To the right there is a link that is marked "BookFlix" this is a website that has books on it for your child to listen to. Bookflix is offered through the Omaha Public Schools for students to use. It highlights the words and has a nonfiction book paired with a fiction book. The books are excellent reads and your child has probably listened to these stories before in my classroom through a listening center or through whole group reading activities.

2. Look at your child's work in their "Go Folders" daily. There are worksheets/work pages/activities that are sent home daily with your child. These are things that we have worked on inside the classroom. Examine their work and ask what they did today in school and why. Review things that are incorrect or have your child explain their work to you. This helps with your child find a purpose in their work and for you, as the parent/guardian, to understand and see what kind of work your chid is doing daily.

3. Practice blending letters together to make words. If you have magnets on your fridge those are a great tool for your child to learn how to read and put letters together to make words. At the beginning of the school year there were letter cards (captial and lower case) that went home. Use these to help your child make words. Help your child sound our simple words that are short (3-5 letters) or any of their high frequency words.

4. Teddy bear words or high frequency words will come home on a weekly basis. They are to be hung in your child's room, on the fridge, or anywhere in your house that they can see and read them daily. Review the words frequently! Ask your child to read them to you, spell them for you, write them or put them in a sentence.

5. Feel free to explore the links to the right. They are extra resources for you to use with your child at home. Please make sure to always supervise their internet use.

Happy reading!!!
