Stoplight Behavior Management System
In order for all students to receive the best education possible, it is important that we all do our part to help create a positive learning environment. I have high expectations for each student. In order to maintain a positive level of behavior, our classroom will use a stoplight system.
The stoplight system is a way to monitor behavior in our classroom while providing a visual reminder of the immediate goal. Each child begins his or her day with a green light (Go) note card. Occasionally students may make poor choices within the classroom or school. Students will be given a verbal warning about an unacceptable behavior. If the student fails to listen to the verbal warning, the student will pull his or her green card to the yellow card (Caution). This puts the student in charge of his or her behavior. Occasionally a student will continue the negative behavior, causing him or her to move to the red card (Stop). When this happens, the student will lose classroom privileges. Please note that the traffic light system is not appropriate for an infraction of a serious nature such as hitting or fighting. A serious infraction will result in an immediate referral to Ms. Johnson, the school principal.
Behavior will be marked daily in each child’s assignment notebook. Students that stay on green will earn a stamp for the day. When a child is moved to the red light, he or she will discuss their behavior with me and a discipline form will be sent home, to be signed by a parent. The purpose of this note is to encourage discussion between the parent and child. Ask your child why he or she was moved to the red light, and make a plan toward improving the misbehavior. An alternative plan may be necessary for a child who demonstrates a pattern of misbehavior. In this case, I will contact you for a conference.
For each day that a student remains on the green light all day, he or she will receive a ticket. Tickets can be accumulated and redeemed for various classroom or individual incentives/rewards. Bonus tickets will be awarded for students who have stayed on the green light all week or have completed all homework assignments on time in a given week. Students may only earn bonus tickets for weeks in which they have perfect attendance.
Please keep in mind that this behavior management program is in place to support, not to drive, the classroom instruction. I strive to create a welcoming, nurturing, exciting classroom environment that is conducive to learning. A positive experience will help to promote an interest in learning. Feel free to contact me with questions, comments and concerns.
Thank you for your continued support! I look forward to a great year together!
