                                                                             Reading

This will be an exciting year for our first and second graders in reading.  My wish for all of my students is that they learn to love to read this year. We will be  practicing the "Daily Five" in our classroom. We will start each morning with a class meeting in our gathering area. After the meeting we will begin our reading workshop.  At this time I will introduce or reinforce a reading strategy or concept, and the students will then practice that strategy during their "read to self" time slot.   After twenty to twenty-five minutes we have another whole group instruction time.  The students share and I teach them another new reading strategy.  At this time they meet with their partners to share a reading experience. Students will get individual instruction during these independent reading times.  The children will learn to choose books that are interesting for them yet are comfortable for them to read.  The purpose of this format is not only for them to become better readers, but also to love reading. Each child will be bringing home books to read, so please take the time to listen to him or her read each night.  Writing, word work, and listening are also components of our reading sessions each morning.
