The Village Concept
The Village Concept
Miller Park Elementary became a Village Concept School at the start of the 2001-2002 school year. The Village Concept is multicultural education with an emphasis towards African and African-American cultures. In a Village Concept School, Nguzo Saba is followed. In Swahili, Nguzo Saba means the Seven Principles, and they are the seven basic values of African culture. These seven principles contribute to the building of family, community, and culture.
The Seven Principles
Umoja = Unity
Kujichagulia = Self-determination
Ujima = Collective Work and Responsibility
Ujamaa = Cooperative Economics
Nia = Purpose
Kuumba = Creativity
Imani = Faith
