My name is Colleen Morrissey. I am the Speech/Language Pathologist at Howard Kennedy and Franklin Elementary Schools. I am at Howard Kennedy every other day.
Speech/Language Services are part of the Special Education Department of Omaha Public Schools. The program at Howard Kennedy is a combination of inclusion in the regular classroom and pull-out sessions in a small group. The needs of the student dictate which is best for the student.
If you have concerns about your child’s speech (how he/she makes sounds) or language (how he/she uses sentences, quantity of talking or how he follows directions) talk to your child’s teacher or call me. We will discuss the concerns with the teacher and determine if an evaluation is necessary.
The best way to development good speech and language is to talk to your child. Talk about the meals you cook, the weather, what you will do tomorrow, to name just a few ideas. Ask questions and expect your child to answer you with eye contact. If your child answers with one word, state it back to him with a longer sentence. Be a good language role model for your child. You are the first and best teacher of your child.
