Content Standards for Elementary Art
1. Use various art media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas.
2. Understand that visual arts in relation to aesthetics, history and culture.
3. Analyze the characteristics and merits of works of art.
4. Explore ways that art is connected to other things we learn about.
Each grade level curriculum addresses these content standards through selected themes that are suited to the ages and ability level of the students of that grade. Art lessons are planned to teach student important concepts while they develop their own unique creative abilities.
Kindergarten: Discover. . .art is all around us.
First Grade: Imagine. . .what art can tell us about our lives.
Second Grade: Explore. . .art forms all around the world.
Third Grade: Investigate. . .art that brings communities together.
Fourth Grade: Understand. . .art is a visual language.
Fifth Grade: Analyze. . .art that reflects influence (American art)
Sixth Grade: Interpret. . .art that reflects our common humanity through time.
Our curriculum is based on standards which have been developed by teachers in alignment with National Standards for Art Education.
The Arts:
- Improve kids' overall academic performance.
- Show that kids actively engaged in arts education are likely to have higher test scores than those with little to no involvement.
- Develop skills needed by the 21st century workforce: critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, teamwork and more.
- Teach kids to be more tolerant and open.
- Allow kids to express themselves creatively and bolster their self-confidence.
- Keep students engaged in school and less likely to drop out.
