What is an IEP? What an FBA? have you ever gone to an IEP meeting and you are confused by all the weird jargon?
Here is a site that might help you.
IEP: Individualized Education Plan
Once a Year, we have an Individualized Education Plan meeting to discuss goals of the student. Ths is a meeting that can happen more than once a year, if the parent and teacher decide that it is necessary to add more information. This is a legally binding document.
Individualized Education Plan Team: IEP team
Their are certain members that have to at least be invited to the IEP meeting
1. Parent
2. Regular Education Teacher
3. Special Education Teacher
4. Local Education Agency Representative
5. Students have to be invited when they are of high school age
What are goals and objectives?
The parent/guardian and teachers will work with the parent to see what the child's main needs are in the areas of reading, writing math and social skills or one of those areas. These are specific things that the group needs to see as to how will the student progress in a year in these areas. For example if the child has trouble reading at grade level then a goal might be to have that child read at grade level. To ask for more specific advice about your child's goals and objectives please see your classroom resource teacher.
What is a Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA)
On a schale from 0-2 the parent and teachers rate the student on several categories to see what is the purpose of their behavior. 2 meaning it happens often and then 0 it doesn't happen at all. Then they define what exactly is the behavior that is happening and is it happening in different places/rooms or just one place/room?
What is a Behavior Intervention Plan? (BIP)
A Behavior Intervention plan takes in mind the information from the Functional Behavior Analysis. What behaviors were rated the highest and what is the exact behavior that the student needs to work on. The team then brainstorms various things that can make the students day more successful. The team will think of things that motivate that student, does he/she need work that needs to be shortened or changed in a different way so that they can not be so overwhelmed.
How often do should a parent/guardian be updated about how their child is doing in the resource room?
At least every quarter the resource teacher will send a copy of the child's progress to the parent/guardian
