Here are some reading strategies that you might use with your child or even their friend or a nephew or niece.
How to pick a book that is just right
1. Just pick any book and have the child read 1 page.
2. If there are more than 5 words one the page then the story is difficult and pick another book.
3. It is ok to put a book away and pick another book.
4. Often a child might be motivated to read a hard book that has more than 5 difficult words on one page.
When I am reading with my child what should I have them look for to understand the words in the story?
1. Look for pictures. Often pictures say a lot about the story
2. Look for words in bold are words the title of a chapter. These often are big clue words about the meaning of the story.
3. If your child is too frustrated skip that word and go back to it when your are finished with the paragraph or the page. Then talk a little more about it.
